Open Access Endoscopy

A streamlined pathway for medically suitable patients to proceed directly to endoscopy without a prior specialist consultation.

What is Open Access Endoscopy?

Open access endoscopy is a convenient pathway for patients who are medically suitable to proceed directly to a gastroscopy or colonoscopy without first requiring a specialist consultation.

This pathway is available for patients referred by their GP who meet specific clinical criteria. It is designed to reduce waiting times and streamline care for appropriate patients, ensuring faster access to diagnosis.

Who is Suitable for Open Access?

Your GP will assess whether this pathway is appropriate. Generally, suitable patients are those who:

  • Have a low-risk profile for sedation and anaesthetic
  • Have no complex medical conditions requiring specialist review beforehand
  • Have a clear, standard indication for the procedure
  • Have had no recent major changes in their general health
  • Are not taking blood-thinning medications requiring adjustment
