72-Hour pH Testing (Bravo™)

Ambulatory acid reflux monitoring using the Bravo™ wireless pH capsule system — allowing 72 hours of continuous data while you go about daily life.

What is 72-Hour pH Testing?

72-hour pH testing is the gold standard investigation for gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD). It measures the amount of acid exposure in the oesophagus over an extended period, correlating symptoms with acid episodes.

We use the Bravo™ wireless pH monitoring system — a small pH-sensing capsule that is attached to the oesophageal wall during gastroscopy and wirelessly transmits data to a small receiver worn on your belt or wrist. The capsule naturally detaches and passes through the digestive tract after 5–7 days.

Who Needs pH Testing?

  • Persistent heartburn or reflux symptoms not adequately controlled with medication
  • Atypical reflux symptoms (chronic cough, hoarseness, chest pain)
  • Pre-operative assessment for anti-reflux surgery
  • Assessment of treatment efficacy (on vs. off acid-suppression therapy)
  • Suspected non-acid reflux
  • Evaluation of unexplained oesophageal symptoms

How the Test Works

1

Capsule Placement

During a brief gastroscopy procedure, the Bravo™ capsule is attached to the oesophageal wall. Sedation is used for comfort.

2

72-Hour Recording

Over the next 72 hours, the capsule continuously measures and wirelessly transmits pH data to a small portable receiver.

3

Symptom Diary

You press buttons on the receiver to log symptoms (e.g. heartburn, meals, lying down) in real time for correlation with pH data.

4

Data Analysis

After 72 hours, you return the receiver. Your specialist analyses the data and correlates acid exposure with your symptoms.

During the Test Period

  • Resume normal diet and activities — the test is designed to reflect your real-life acid exposure
  • Log all meals, symptoms, and time lying down using the receiver buttons
  • You may shower normally; avoid submerging the receiver
  • Some patients experience mild chest discomfort from the capsule for the first 24–48 hours
  • Avoid MRI scans while the capsule is in place
